摘要

This paper provides the first comprehensive firm-level evidence on how climate change exposure affects stock return volatility. Utilizing Chinese A-share listed companies from 2011 to 2022 as samples, we discover that enterprises with higher climate-related exposure tend to experience greater stock return volatility, fueled by transition exposures instead of physical exposures. Mechanism tests indicate that this positive impact operates through increased greenwashing behavior, intensified investor reactions, and heightened operational uncertainties. Moreover, firms with strong ESG practices and transparent environmental disclosures appear better equipped to mitigate this effect. Heterogeneity analyses further demonstrate that positive correlation between climate change exposure and stock return volatility is particularly prominent among firms located in regions with stricter environmental regulations, those with high pollution intensity, and those outside the high-tech sector. These discoveries underscore the critical significance of enhanced climate risk disclosure and ESG integration in investment decision-making and regulatory practices.

刘浩，管理学博士，广东外语外贸大学金融学院副教授、硕士生导师、云山青年学者，研究生工作办公室主任，兼任中国保险资产管理业协会研究专委会特邀研究员，广东省高等学校人文社科重点研究基地—金融开放与资产管理研究中心研究员，汕尾市公权力大数据监督特聘顾问。分别于2011年、2018年在电子科技大学获得经济学学士、管理科学与工程博士学位（硕博连读），2016年赴香港理工大学会计与金融系访学。主持广东省哲学社会科学规划项目2项、广东省自然科学基金-面上项目1项，广东省区域联合基金-青年基金项目1项，广东省研究生教育创新计划1项，广东省本科高校教学质量与教学改革工程项目1项。作为主研人员参与了文化名家暨“四个一批”人才项目一项、国家自然科学基金面上及青年项目多项。近年来在《Energy Economics》《International Review of Financial Analysis》《Economics Letters》《Research in International Business and Finance》《Pacific-Basin Finance Journal》《Journal of Forecasting》等国际高水平SSCI期刊以及《系统工程理论与实践》《系统管理学报》等国内权威CSSCI期刊累计发表论文28篇，出版学术专著2部。研究成果获教育部第九届高校科学研究优秀成果奖（人文社会科学）三等奖、四川省社会科学成果二等奖。曾多次获得广东外语外贸大学优秀教学奖，获评优秀本科生导师与优秀研究生导师称号。
